The pendulum test is the HSE's preferred method for assessing slip risk in the UK. It measures the dynamic coefficient of friction between a rubber slider (representing a shoe heel) and the floor surface, under both wet and dry conditions. We carry out pendulum testing across Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Loughborough, Coventry and the wider East Midlands region under our UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.
A weighted pendulum arm is released from a fixed height. As it swings, a rubber slider strikes the floor surface, and friction reduces the swing's onward travel. The test produces a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) — a single number describing the slip resistance of the surface.
Each test location is assessed in three directions, and both wet and dry conditions are measured as standard. We use TRL-pattern equipment certified to BS EN 16165:2021 (Annex C) with sliders that are conditioned to current standard between every set of swings.
The HSE classifies slip risk using PTV bands:
Most commercial floors are expected to achieve 36+ in the conditions they are most likely to encounter. A floor that scores well dry but fails wet is still a problem in any environment where water, drinks, cleaning fluids or condensation are foreseeable.
Every test produces a UKAS-accredited report containing the test conditions, the equipment calibration record, all individual test results (each direction, wet and dry), the PTV score per location, photographs, and a clear interpretation against HSE guidance. Reports are typically delivered within five working days, with faster turnaround available on request.
